University Placement – Software Development

Our client provides back office technology solutions to several high-profile customers in the mobile telecommunications industry. They typically offer several placements to University students each year that last between 10 and 14 months. The placement will be within one of their development teams and the work will involve analysis, programming, testing, implementation and technical support within a results-orientated environment, with a strong customer focus. You will be given responsibility and should have an enthusiastic and flexible approach to the role, with the ability to work under your own initiative and as part of a team. You will be mentored by experienced developers and will get the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects and expand your skill set.

Primary Role: • The development team are responsible for delivering high-quality solutions to our wide range of customers and responding to Change Requests. • The role will involve the design and creation of new functionality and you will respond to customer feedback during acceptance testing. • It is also a requirement to provide support to new functionality until it has been formally accepted by the 1st line support teams, and to provide 2nd line support for all elements of our solution. • A strong affinity for teamwork is vital to work closely with other members of the Service Development team.

Key Accountabilities • Undertaking work on development and support projects • Ensuring management are informed about issues before they escalate • Maintaining Lifecycle’s high standards of quality and customer satisfaction

Required employee skills and attributes Essential • Studying for Computer Science or Software Engineering type degrees, and on-track to achieve First Class or Upper Second-Class degree • Experience of developing applications using Java and/or PHP and database design using SQL Server, Oracle or Postgre SQL. • Knowledge of structured techniques/methodologies - which will be applied in developing low maintenance applications. • Good communications skills; written and verbal. • Ability to multi-task on concurrent projects whilst maintaining attention to detail • Highly self-motivated, autonomous, organised and methodical with attention to detail • Enthusiasm to learn new technologies

Desirable • Enterprise Java (J2EE) • Spring Framework or other IoC containers • SQL Database technologies, (MS SQL Server & PostgreSQL would be an advantage) • Tomcat and/or JBoss application servers • Web 2.0 technologies, AJAX • Experience of telecoms billing processes and/or systems • Any exposure to JSF, IceFaces, Wicket, Scala; Akka, messaging APIs e.g. JMS, AMQP • Hibernate or other ORM • NoSQL technologies such as MongoDB • Linux experience would be an advantage • Web Services: SOAP and Rest • IT networking and Security
